Truth be told, I've never thought of myself as the "cowgirl" type. I think part of my objection is the name "cowgirl" itself...women don't generally want any association with the word "cow." I prefer the term "Country Western," as it conjures up more romantic images of the pioneer days in the southwest, Annie Oakley, Roy Rogers and even Georgia O'Keefe. So upon reflection of my experiences (really experiments) with "Country Western" fashion, I surprised my uptight urban self and realized that my "cowgirl" memories aren't actually that bad...
...at the age of three, already becoming an addicted shopper, I remember picking out a suede rust colored fringe vest. I thought I was the cutest thing when I opted not to wear a shirt underneath (hey, which behind closed doors still might not be a bad idea).
...by eight years of age my wardrobe took on even more of a country girl flare with the addition of a denim skirt. It had a butterfly applique and western style embroidery to coordinate with my snap-front large lapel shirt. (If only I'd had such selections in my wardrobe before making that unforgettable expedition to Manhattan's Denim & Diamonds back in the 1990's).)
...my first brush with cowboy boots came while I was in Japan of all places. I was living there and wore cowboy boots as part of my uniform for a hostess job at an American-style steakhouse. The hand-me-down boots were about 3 sizes too big and I wore tabi socks (the kind with the split-toe) inside to "help" with the fit...
When I think back to the times I embraced my inner "cowgirl" and wore western attire, I remember having a whole lot of fun. I remember the frequent cravings for five alarm chile, corn dogs, ribs and margaritas-all of which were required for energy needed to ride the mechanical bulls (which I've done, just not very well) and hustle cowboys (no comment there) . But, I also remember feeling unusually strong and grounded.
For Fall 2005, the Country Western theme returns again and SimplySoles will be offering boots, shoes and clogs that will satisfy your need for a foot stompin', pig roostin', hootin' and hollerin' good time. For those with the immediate need to quench the country craze, take a look at the very embellished Wyatt by Terre Peck: a shoe that isn't shy and will grab the attention of any guy, cowboy or otherwise. For a sneak preview of the fall offerings, take a peak at the Summon by Isabella Fiore with its lasso-inspired whipstitch lacing.
So...loosen up, giddy up, and round up all your western wears (really I just mean footwear here....overalls are not, I repeat, NOT, back in fashion).
Warm regards,

Rebeccah Sensenbrenner
