Toni Ray founded Hobo International in 1991 in Annapolis, Maryland. Already a veteran tastemaker in the leather industry, Ray spent nearly thirty years as a senior designer and buyer with Georgetown Leather Design, a well-known chain of luxury accessory boutiques. In 1989, Ray left GLD to work as a freelance designer and retail consultant. She delivered a collection of handbag sketches to a client with the design philosophy that women's accessories should be both stylish and practical. The client ultimately chose a different creative directon, but the classic designs resonated Ray. She believed that fashionable handbags with everyday functionality filled an unmet need in the marketplace, and immediately set to work on producing the designs under her own label, Hobo International.
