Based in Sydney, Australia, the company founder Helen Kaminski, designed her first raffia hat, the ‘Classic’, in the early 1980’s to protect her children from the strong Australian sun. Helen chose raffia as it is a perfect natural fibre for use in traditional handcraft due to a natural resin that enables the fibre to remain strong and flexible over time. As the demand for her product grew, Helen developed a workshop facility on the remote island of Madagascar where the highest quality raffia grows. In Madagascar, raffia is harvested ecologically so that the raffia palm tree is unharmed. The original workshop now employs hundreds of craftspeople trained in our unique raffia treatment and crochet methods. These highly skilled and dedicated individuals create products exclusively for Helen Kaminski.
